Topical Minoxidil Therapy in Male Pattern Baldness and Alopecia Areata

Abstract
|
|
|
The efficacy and safety of 2% minoxidil solution and placebo were tested in male pattern baldness and alopecia areata.
This study, of 44 patients with alopecia, ie, 37 patients with- male pattern baldness and 7 patients with alopecia areata, was carried out during 12 weeks period. The results were as follows
1. 6 of 29 patients(20.7% with male pattern baldness using.2% minoxidil noted hair
regrowth, ranging minimally observable hair to an terminal hair.
2. 3 of 5 patients (60%) with alopecia areata using 2% minoxidil noted hair regrowth. 3. 1 patient had an contact dermatitis due to minoxidil solution possibly, but no systemic
side effect were seen.
In the present study, 2% minoxidil solution was significantly more effective than the placebo in male pattern baldness and alopecia. areata, and side effects were negligible.
